Sunflower microgreens - Gilė Sprout

Sprouting Instructions

Sunflower microgreens

Hello,

My name is Paulius and today I am going to tell you how to grow perfect sunflowers microgreens.

I am not going to talk about the nutrition of microgreens because you probably know that they are a real superfood. I will go straight to instructions because it is the reason why you are here.

Step 1: Choosing seeds (Day 1)

instructions

Choose organic raw sunflower seeds.

Step 2: Soaking (Day 1)

instructions

Pour sunflower seeds in a jar with warm water. You need 4 times more water than seeds. Leave them in a jar for 12-14 hours.

Step 3: Germination (Day 2)

instructions

After 12 hours, drain off soak water, wash the seeds and germinate for about 1-3 days (until small sprout “tail” appear). In that period rinse and drain again with warm water – every 8-12 hours. We can germinate in a special sprouter or in a simple jar covered with gauze and pressed with a rubber band. Sprouts don’t need light so we put them in a dark place. The length of the sprouts should be 1-5 mm.

Step 4: Medium and tray preparation (Day 2)

instructions

You can choose any tray you want: plastic, clay or wooden. For sunflower growing, we will use soil. The ground layer in a tray should be about 4-5 centimeters. Sprinkle the soil.

Step 5: Planting (Day 2)

instructions

Pour the sprouted sunflowers into the tray with soil. Sunflowers should beautifully cover the ground, but not be one on top of another. Water your seeds.

Step 6: Pressing down with weights (Day 2)

In order for the roots to become stronger and the plant to grow meatier, juicier and faster to lose the shells, sunflower seeds need to be pressured. If you plant sunflowers in trays, it would be best to put them on top of each other, and on the top put some weight (bricks, books, etc.). If you are planting seeds in one tray or jar, you just need to put a board on it, and then put a weight (books) on top. That’s how we keep it for 2-3 days.

Step 7: Check moisture level (Day 3-5)

It is important to check the humidity and progress daily.

Step 8: Taking off weights (Day 6)

instructions

After removing the weight, move the tray onto a sunny window sill or a LED shelf.

Step 9: Growing and watering (Day 7)

If you are using our LED shelf, do not forget that plants also need to sleep. Keep the lights on for 14-16 hours a day or just turn it off when you go to bed and turn on in the morning. Watering is needed every day. Best in the morning. Young sprouts should be sprayed and older plants should be sprayed and sprinkled. The earth should be neither dry nor too wet.

Step 10: Harvesting and eating (Day 8)

On the 7th to 11th day of cultivation, fresh sunflower seedlings can already be enjoyed. Seeds should be grown until the second crown emerges – about 10 cm. It is recommended to use kitchen scissors for cutting. Cut over the ground, check if there are no shells remaining on microgreens. You can cut them as much as you need for one day or cut them all and keep in the refrigerator like any other salad in a plastic bag or container for up to a week.

We tried many different methods for growing perfect sunflower microgreens and this one is definitely the best.

Now is your turn to grow them. Do not hesitate to send us your pictures with sunflower microgreens to our Facebook, Instagram or email.
